Fashionably Political

Hawkward.

For those who didn’t know

The Supreme Court is officially taking on gay marriage. This could be a very good thing or a very bad thing depending on your stance and the outcome of the cases. Two cases to be exact.

US v Windsor is about DOMA. The goal ideally would be to appeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which takes away federal benefits for same-sex couples. In short, say if a woman is with another woman who was in the military for example. This woman in the military would not be able to share her benefits with her partner under law. Same goes for health insurance coverage, etc. So this case will be heard in March and a decision is expected by June.

Hollingsworth v Perry is about Prop 8, which takes away the right for same-sex couples to get married. California lawmakers had previously approved same-sex marriage, but California voters approved Prop 8 which repealed the right to marry for gay couples.

One of the initial problems with same-sex marriage being a state-by-state case, is that even if a gay couple get married in Maine, if they move to Louisiana the marriage does not have to be recognized under law. This makes it difficult for same-sex couples as one can imagine. Because of this, these cases could be extremely important in finally deciding whether or not same-sex marriage should remain a state-by-state case, or if it should be nationally recognized once and for all.

No matter what a person’s stance is on the issue, I encourage everyone to recognize how monumental these cases could be. Already news stations are speculating that these cases could be the “Loving vs Virginia”  of the age. I will be following this closely and I hope that you do too.

Just a reminder

Election night was a big deal for everyone involved and everyone who voted. We all know the outcome by now. Barack Obama is our President again. It’s been a long race, and on both sides there was hostility. There were those negative campaign ads. There was the bashing and pointing fingers and quotes taken completely out of context. I hope that now that the choice has been made we can all still come together to make our nation great. To advance more or less united, or at least fixed on common goals.

I would like to take a look back. I feel that this is important, given all of the negativity on social media towards both candidates. Here are some pictures. I hope that they will remind each and every one of you that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are people first. Not politicians, not millionaires, people. They had lived before they began their journeys. So please remember that. I do not promote or support hate in any case toward any party. And neither should you.

Please be reminded that once upon a time everyone was young, everyone made stupid decisions, life-changing decisions, and everything in between. We all have laughed, smiled and cried. Just maybe not all at the same time.

So make your jokes, be a little upset or be completely and utterly devastated. Celebrate in the most obnoxious manner that you can. Rub it in your neighbor’s face. But then stop and think, or contemplate when you are done. Ask yourself what happens now. Because the country will not remain strong if we become so divided that we no longer work together. The country can not uphold its place as the most powerful nation in the world if we refuse to compromise or agree where it matters.

Look at these two. Playing the same game around the same age. Do you think that they knew at that age that so much would be weighing on their shoulders? I am inclined to think “no.” Two people, playing the same game, in nearly an identical position. They may play for different teams, they may come from different backgrounds, they may have different goals. But they are still people. They were children once. They have families. They have loved and they have lost. They know pain and they know joy. Just like the rest of us. United, we will all stand a little taller, be a little better, and have a brighter future. It is not the end for Republicans, it is not the beginning of a socialist takeover for Democrats. Let us all fix this country together.

To Anyone 18+

Make sure you are registered to vote. Please. This is your life too. This is your debate too. I know that some states have a deadline that just passed. If there are still people all over streetcorners in your town with clipboards or fold-out tables. Please. Do not ignore them. And watch the VP debate tonight at 9pm e/t if you can. The vice president usually shares policy views with the president pretty consistenly. So remember that Joe Biden and Paul Ryan reflect the choices of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Choose wisely, based on what you believe. That is all.

High Fashion? No, Guy Fashion.

After a long week of debates and college stuff, I wanted to unwind. A fashion post was the perfect solution. I think all of the fashion posts I have done centered around female fashion. Let’s get some testosterone going. Here are some of my favorite pieces of fall fashion for the fellas.

Oh Professor!

Cardigans hold a very dear place in my heart. If he can pull it off a guy can look sophisticated, cultured, and/or highly intelligent.

Sweaters

Would fall be complete if everyone didn’t don a sweater now and again? I think not. Whether it’s layered over a button up or a standalone piece, sweaters look great.

Oh my Oxfords

I love a crisp-looking oxford shirt anytime, but especially during the fall. Though I prefer a tucked oxford, untucked looks

just as good.

Get Blazed

Blazers are another one of those items that looks good no matter the weather. I think that they are especially fitting when the fall air is crisp. They don’t need to be a part of a suit to stand up either.

Scarves

An easy way to look a little bit cooler is to wrap a scarf around his neck. Simple enough right? It also makes it tons easier for a girl to pull her honey in for a kiss while the autumn wind blows.

Honorable Mention: Vests, Combat Boots

Well I can say for sure that vests might be my favorite part of a suit or tux. A nice tailored vest does things to a woman. And as far as combat boots, even the hippiest hipster can appeal to me if he’s wearing them. There’s something extra special about a good pair of CB’s.

Let it be known that no one rocks a vest like Joe.

That is all.

A note

I realize that the “Policies” post seems a little long. It might in fact seem too long for you to want to read. Well, I suggest breaking it up into sections and reading it like a series. Or you could always just skip to whatever issue matters most to you. I don’t know, there are lots of ways of going about it. There are probably much shorter versions of the policies and if I come across any I will most definitely link them. Also, do not just take my word for it. You could go straight to a candidate’s website and look at their policies in depth. There is always more to be learned. Do not be an uninformed voter! That is all.
